Handsewn Kilts from Ben Wyvis Kilts

We are a small team of kiltmakers with over 70 years combined experience behind us. Quality is the key word here. The kilt is a very individual garment, and making a kilt takes years of training and experience. The 'weight' of the cloth is important in respect of how your garment will hang, and to its durability over the years.

You will always look your best in a truly well-made kilt, this being part of the appeal to every person who puts one on. Each kilt is meticulously handsewn, the only method of hiding the stitching, and taking between 10 - 12 hours to complete.

Making Your Kilt

First of all the kilt length of cloth has to be spread out and the pleats chalked in. Each pleat is handsewn together. Our usual method of pleating is to pleat to set where the pleats are the the same as the pattern, which requires greater expertise and is a work of art.

The other, simpler method is to pleat to stripe, so that the pleats at the back stand out and are more uniform, hence the reason why the military and pipe bands always specify this method.

All Gents kilts are made with a full 8 yards of cloth and on a 48" hip and over, we use 9 yards - no skimping on materials here - incorporating sporran straps as standard.

Unlike some manufacturers, we provide 2/3 fringes and quality leather fastening straps to guarantee longevity and maintain appearance. We also supply matching flashes and garters - all we ask you to supply are the legs!
