The small single-edged knife (pronounced “ski-en doo”) is worn with traditional Scottish dress, tucked into the top of the kilt hose with only the handle visible. Originally, the knives were used by servants to prepare meat. Now, The Sgian Dubh has taken a more aesthetic than practical role in the modern highland outfit and is worn on a number of occasions.
